Day 5 Second Day at St Joe's Hospital

Day 5 of our International nursing experience., We returned back to the hospital where the students worked with the Guyanese nursing students and the staff. We were able to experience things that we normally do not see in the states. We cared for children with cleft palate, Dengue Fever, and sickle cell anemia. Chatted with faculty from the school of nursing who are very thankful for the text we brought for them. Dr Mailloux

Taking it to the streets: Mobile Clinic on Guyana Day 4

Hello readers,
Today we spent time working in the mobile clinic that is offered by St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital. The clinic offers pro-bono care to indigent residents of Georgetown. We were excited to have the opportunity to provide direct care to Guyanese people in the surrounding community. Students visited with patients, took health histories and blood pressure readings and provided health teaching. Many of the problems we saw were similar to those we experience in the U.S.- high blood pressure, diabetes, and HIV. Read the entries of today's bloggers, Barbara Campagna (graduate family nurse practitioner student) and Marianne Karalunas, (part-time and evening accelerated program student).

Dr. Hage

Health Care in Different Land: Day 2 in Guyana

Today the students will be attending classes at St. Joseph's Mercy School of Nursing and working on the medical-surgical ward. We delivered much needed medical supplies and medications that our group collected in the U.S. Ms. Helen Browman the COO of St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital (SJMH) was especially delighted to recieve the electonic thermometers and pulse oximeters (used to measure patients' oxygen saturation levels) that were donated by the church of one of our students, Angela Evans. we then received a tour of the hospital and I was pleasantly surprised to see a great deal of growth in their operations and services. Our bloggers for today are: Erin Colby and Deborah Morris who are both students in the part-time and evening accelerated program.

Travel Day To Guyana

Well students, today is the day! It's hard to believe that all our planning will finally turn into reality. Please remind your family and friends to check in to the blog. We will be posting everyday (barring any major technological problems!) so they will be able to follow us along on our journey. See you this evening for our ride to JFK.

Welcome!

Hello students,

It’s amazing to think that we will be boarding a plane bound for Georgetown, Guyana on February 27! We are excited about this international, service learning experience and know that you are too. This blog will serve as an important part of our course by allowing you to process your thoughts and experiences about our trip. Each of you will take turns serving as the facilitator of the blog while we are in Guyana.

To give you some practice and to help us learn more about each of you, we would like to open by asking you to tell us: What you are hoping to discover, both personally and professionally, through this experience? We look forward to reading your responses.

Regards,
Dr. Hage and Dr. Mailloux
